The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from February until November. This is a very rigorous trip (or rather about half of it is) and it rates about 7 of 10 for difficulty. So this is really a 4-way intersection. The hike out is quite strenuous either way you go. It junctions with the Benton MacKaye Trail which joins the Appalachian Trail. GPS WAS A MUST! Coming back from the falls along fought ridge trail, there is no obvious water source and you'll be going all uphill until the last mile or so.

We took this trail over the summer after leaving jacks river falls via hickory ridge trail heading back through the cohutta's to our car at tearbritches. We took Rough Ridge in and East Cowpen out. I hiked East Cowpen Trail to the backside (north) of Cowpen Mtn where the ridge line comes down to the trail. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from March until October. (4,151 ft.) CML003 Location: 34.9073372, -84.5796661 Straight @ 3-way; to R, hemlocks and oaks shade campsite with space for 4 or 5 tents. Your email and your recipient's email will NOT be shared with anyone. This is more like 9. Wear thick pants and boots. Elevation: 3,914 feet (1,193 meters) Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Not recommended. This website covers the last 34 miles. Mostly easy to moderate backpacking with some great trails to take off of this one leading to nice views or waterfalls. Round trip would be 18 plus. There are also many downed trees making the trail difficult to navigate. On the other hand, the East Cowpen Trail is a nearly continuous moderate descent that makes for an easy hike ending. If you follow the arrow on the sign through the camping clearing to the river, you will see a row or rocks forming a type of dam. East Cowpen Trail is located within the Higdon-Mobile CCD at latitute 34.9045 and longitude -84.5785. On the positive side, contrary to some of the reviews, there were a few spots with views. The East Cowpen Trail follows the path of a former highway through the forest, now a narrow gravel-laden path, thanks to the designation of the Cohuttas as a highway-free Wilderness area in 1975.

Up to this point the Hickory Creek trail had not been too back condition-wise but when we continue the next day the conditions of the tail again took a turn for the worse.

Still smells like fire in this area of the woods. The roads have been repaired and upgraded but there are some parts you could bottom out.

Next you reach the Jacks River trail and must cross the river. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. However, 0.6 miles from the junction, BUMP!

We crossed the Jacks River one more time and picked a campsite where permitted (You cannot camp in a closed section close to Jacks River Falls).

East Cowpen is a 7-mile ridge trail running the length of the Cohutta Mountain which bisects the Cohutta Wilderness and separates the Conasauga and Jacks River Watershed. This trail head was not marked at all and had to use GPS to confirm we were in fact on the correct trail at all (it seemed to be an old road but has been overgrown). Enjoyed lunch there and conintued on the trail.
