Shadows in the darker scenes look great, details still strongly visible. Tony, however, is hardly your typical protagonist. Watching Rififi makes you want to watch more Jules Dassin films, which is the greatest compliment you can pay any movie. That said, the stories on it shared by Mann and Caan are great, even if they do occasionally lapse into silence.

Dassin’s camera is evocative and be it the ferocious close ups or the occasional bit of flourish (I’m thinking a dolly shot near the film’s conclusion that is beyond comprehension), this is an angry and energetic piece of filmmaking coming out of the soul of an auteur banished by Hollywood. He and Mohner’s chemistry feels real, and the centerpiece of the film is able to come to life thanks to the physicality that these two, along with names like Robert Manuel and even Dassin himself really turn their characters into living, breathing beings. If you’re a fan of heist flicks or film noir, then I recommend Rififi, as it has the best of what you look for in the genres. The presentation found here is spot on, possibly the best one Iâve seen from Arrow, and the supplements are all worth the time. Dassin had a checkered career, as he was blacklisted from Hollywood and came to Europe to continue his career. The supplements are modest, with the highlight being a twenty nine minute interview with Dassin, which was recorded in 2000 (eight years before his death). It’s not shocking that Dassin would win Best Director at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. This film is probably solely for people interested in the history of film and its development. With little reason to keep living he plans a final job. He never testified, fled to Europe and found trouble making films as Hollywood made it clear no film bearing his name would be distributed in the U.S.

Criterion’s Blu-ray transfers of their DVD catalogue are almost always a substantial upgrade, but in the best scenarios, they are revelations. The fact that on a minimal budget the director was also the script writer plus played one of the main characters in the film, makes this an amazing tour de force. All three, however, buck the idea of the old adage saying there is no honor among thieves, as the opposite is exactly the theme this film works with. Suspenseful. A lot of what I have to say about Rififi would probably read as hyperbole as it stands as not only an important film given its director’s political status, but the way in which it can double as not only an art film, but also a striking piece of cinema that can be enjoyed by any measure of movie lover. Criterion’s new Blu-ray transfer adds much more detail to every inky black scene, elevating the overall effect of this mid-’50s film from director Jules Dassin, who costars as Italian safe-cracker César le Milanais. In an earlier review, I criticised the sound synchronisation - well, Criterion have rectified this problem in the current second printing.
Gray levels are rendered without issue and are clearly defined. I would have loved, however, if this new release included a new audio commentary and a 30-minute documentary on Dassin and his journey from blacklisted filmmaker to the man who brought us Rififi. Mann’s eye for detail and for color was fully formed in his first feature, and the design is perfectly complimented by the score by Tangerine Dream, which creates an otherworldliness to the proceedings, but also amps up the tension.
