But Jacob’s original intentions are eclipsed after a chance encounter with Orito Aibagawa, the disfigured daughter of a samurai doctor and midwife to the city’s powerful magistrate.

Naive Jacob accepts this unquestioningly. I love the book and this is a great performance, but it's an abridged version which loses some of the original's delicate beauty (and some elements of the story) in exchange for brevity. Haruki Murakami, Narrated by:
But now she can’t escape: suddenly, there are news reports of ‘Empty Men’ materialising all around the coast, and the roads are gridlocked.
Fellow ski-resort guests include the celebrated Russian ex-ballerina Natasha Nevkorina, whose beauty is matched only by her languor, Natasha's burly husband, nightclub owner Johnny DuVivien, and the wealthy Flahertés, a family that has made its money importing scents: handsome playboy Barney, his wife, Regan, their two obnoxious children and the governess Rosalie.
Nobody knew where it came from.

Haruki Murakami, The electrifying new novel by 'one of the most brilliantly inventive writers of this, or any country.'
As a whole the book, with some beautiful writing, takes you deep into what felt like a realistic world of early 19th century Japan.
And there’s one animal in particular he loves: Gertrude the gorilla.

Kate Reading,
Mitchell's plot is less sensational, his characters more realistic, the scope more restrained. Meticulously researched - including a toe curling description of a contemporary medical procedure that makes me feel more ill than most horror movie scenes.

We journey with Jacob, meeting a rogue's gallery of unsavoury and profiteering merchants and sailors, for whom Jacob's sense of honour is either an affront or an opportunity.

Mitchell writes great characters which absorb your attention and he isn't afraid to shock and certainly doesn't feel the need for a happy ending. On a quiet seafront in the middle of the afternoon the sun sets, the clouds part and something like a pale, elongated human figure appears on the horizon. The primary narrative focuses on the titular Jacob De Zoet, who has been sent to a Dutch trade outpost in 1800's Japan to look for evidence of graft being perpetrated by the previous Chief Resident.
